BUH launches MORE-OB obstetrical improvement program

April 16, 2012

As part of Prairie North Health Region's continuing drive to improve the patient experience and deliver safe, high-quality care, Battlefords Union Hospital's obstetrical unit is launching a three-year performance improvement program for its caregivers and administrators.

The MOREOB (Managing Obstetrics Risk Efficiently) program is a Canadian program built on evidence-based practice standards and guidelines. It has been implemented in hundreds of hospitals across Canada.

“Going through this established program will help our staff consolidate and share a common knowledge base,” said Barbara Jiricka, Vice-President of Integrated Health Services for Prairie North Health Region. “The result will be a better patient experience, as we deliver continually improving, safe patient care.”

BUH's obstetrical unit's mission statement is ‘Working together to provide a consistent and safe approach to obstetrical care.' Ensuring all obstetrical caregivers – including obstetricians/gynecologists, family physicians who care for obstetrical patients, nurses who work in the unit, and administrators – take part in this training is key to achieving that mission.

The annual cost of the MOREOB program is $34,225. The SUN (Saskatchewan Union of Nurses) Partnership – Recruitment and Retention Fund is contributing $14,800 annually to the program, and Prairie North Health Region is covering the remainder, including costs associated with staff replacement.

The program consists of three modules, with each module including theory chapters, skills drills, workshops, personal learning projects, case audits, patient satisfaction surveys, and evaluation. The guiding principle of the program is patient safety.

“The work will continue after the initial three-year commitment, as we bring new staff onboard and continue to update our team's skills and best practices,” said Jiricka.

More information about the program can be found at www.moreob.com.
