Inpatient
The goal of inpatient service is to restore individuals’ capacity to live independently. Diagnostic and treatment services are provided on an inpatient basis in designated mental health units within general hospitals. These services cover a wide range of acute mental illnesses. In some centres, day treatment is also provided.
Services that may be available at inpatient mental health facilities include:
- 24-hour nursing service
- Consultation (involuntary admissions)
- Specialized treatment service
- Day treatment
- Crisis management
- Counselling for individuals and families
- Nursing consultation to other units
- Medical and psychosocial assessments
- Behaviour management programs
- Health promotion and prevention education
- Case management
- Assessment for long-term care placement
